The suburbs (growths outside the historic city walls) are usually characterised by a high density and urban precariousness. These tactical growths arose spontaneously, out of the mere necessity of the inhabitants who settled outside the city walls.

In the modern urban extensions, the aim was to move away from this type of uncontrolled growth, using strategies that would give more space to the city’s new neighbourhoods.
